Safe Washing Machine Checks Before Booking a Repair

Some washing-machine problems have a simple external cause that can be checked safely. The following checks do not require the appliance to be dismantled.

Always follow the manufacturer’s instructions. Do not remove appliance panels, interfere with wiring, bypass a safety lock or attempt an internal repair.

Washing Machine Will Not Start

Check that the appliance is switched on at the socket and that the door is fully closed. Look for a child-lock symbol, delayed-start setting or error code on the display.

If the plug, socket or cable is hot, damaged, discoloured, buzzing or giving off a burning smell, stop using the appliance. Do not continue resetting the power.

Washing Machine Is Not Filling With Water

Check that the household water supply is available and that the washing-machine water tap has not been turned off.

If the inlet hose can be seen safely, check whether it is visibly kinked or trapped. Do not pull out a heavy fitted appliance or disconnect plumbing unless it is safe and you are competent to do so.

Washing Machine Is Not Draining

A drainage problem may be connected to a blocked filter, trapped drain hose, faulty pump or another internal component.

Check whether the external drain hose is visibly kinked or crushed. The filter should only be checked by following the manufacturer’s instructions, after safely disconnecting the appliance and preparing for retained water to escape.

Do not open the filter while the water may still be hot. If you are uncertain, request a repair instead.

Washing Machine Is Not Spinning

Check whether the programme has completed and whether water remains inside the drum. Many washing machines will not spin properly while they are unable to drain.

An overloaded or badly unbalanced load can also prevent spinning. After the appliance has stopped safely, remove some items or redistribute the load and follow the manufacturer’s instructions before trying again.

If the drum still fails to spin, the appliance may require diagnosis.

Washing Machine Is Making a Banging Noise

Stop the cycle if the appliance is moving violently. Check whether the load contains one heavy item or has gathered on one side of the drum.

Remove or redistribute the washing once the machine has stopped safely. Also check pockets for coins and other loose objects before running another cycle.

Persistent banging, grinding or scraping may indicate a mechanical fault and should be investigated.

Washing Machine Is Leaking

Stop the programme and turn off the water supply if it is safe to do so. Keep away from any water near the plug, socket or electrical connections.

Do not touch a plug or socket with wet hands. If the electrical supply can be isolated safely from a dry location, switch it off.

Visible checks can include the door seal, detergent drawer and accessible hoses. A continuing or substantial leak requires professional diagnosis.

Washing Machine Door Will Not Open

Do not force the door. It may remain locked when water is still inside the drum, while the appliance is hot or immediately after the programme has finished.

Wait for the safety lock to release according to the manufacturer’s instructions. If water remains inside or the lock does not release, the drainage system or door-lock mechanism may require attention.

Washing Machine Is Tripping the Electrics

Stop using the washing machine if it repeatedly trips the circuit breaker, blows a fuse, produces a burning smell or makes an electrical buzzing or crackling sound.

Do not repeatedly reset the circuit breaker and do not connect the appliance through an extension lead. The washing machine or household electrical supply should be checked by an appropriately competent professional.

Washing Machine Is Showing an Error Code

Write down the complete code and check the appliance instruction manual or manufacturer’s official support information.

Include the error code, brand and model number in the repair request where possible. This information can help prepare for the diagnostic visit, but an error code does not always identify the failed component conclusively.

When Should You Stop Using the Washing Machine?

Stop using the appliance and request professional assistance if you notice:

• Smoke or a burning smell
• Scorching around the plug or socket
• A hot or damaged cable, plug or socket
• Repeated circuit-breaker tripping
• Electrical buzzing or crackling
• A substantial water leak
• Water close to electrical connections
• Broken door glass
• Violent movement or severe grinding
• A fault that continues after safe external checks

Do not remove covers or attempt an internal electrical repair.
